The founder

Tao Li built this club to coach the way she was coached

Tao Li is the only Singaporean female swimmer to reach an Olympic final. She founded the club to give children and adults the same thing that made her a champion: correct technique from day one, taught by coaches who have raced themselves.

  • Our junior swimmers consistently rank among the top 3 in Singapore
  • A complete pathway, from water confidence to elite competition
  • Coaches handpicked and trained to Tao Li's own method

How it works

Your first four steps with us

  1. Trial lesson

Your swimmer's first lesson is a trial, so the coach can see where they are in the water.

  2. The right level

The coach places them in the level that fits, so nobody is held back or rushed.

  3. A plan of their own

Each new student gets a file with their programme outline and a 16-week lesson plan.

  4. Progress you can see

After 16 lessons, a swim assessment and a written report for parents.

Not sure where to start?

Book a trial lesson. The coach will assess your swimmer and recommend the right level and class.

About Tao Li

Tao Li, Olympic finalist and head coach

Tao Li was the first Singaporean swimmer to reach an Olympic final, placing 5th in the 100m butterfly at Beijing 2008, and is still the only Singaporean woman to do so. Today she runs Tao Li Swimming Club, coaching the next generation with the same discipline and technique that carried her to the world stage.

Why she started the club

Start right, and the potential shows

Tao Li learned early that a swimmer's ceiling is set by the strokes they learn first. Habits formed in the first lessons are hard to undo later, so in 2016 she founded Tao Li Swimming Club at Temasek Club, where every swimmer, from a three-year-old to an adult beginner, is taught the correct technique from day one.

The result is a teaching method of her own: a structured level system, a lesson plan for every student and regular assessments, delivered by coaches she has handpicked and trained. It is the same approach for a toddler finding their confidence and for a junior chasing a national title.

Her goal reaches beyond the pool. Tao Li wants every child to leave with resilience, confidence and a winning mindset they can carry into school and life.

Kids, toddler and baby swimming lessons in Singapore

Your child learns to be safe and confident in the water, then masters freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly with the correct technique from the very first lesson. Small classes, a lesson plan for every child and a written progress report for you.

What parents look for

More than learning to swim

Swimming lessons give young children far more than a new sport. Here is what our lessons build, week by week.

Coach supporting a child learning to float
  • Water safety. Children first learn to float, breathe and move safely, so they are water safe before anything else. We also teach SwimSafer, Singapore's national water safety programme.
  • Confidence. Small steps and a coach who knows each child turn a nervous first lesson into a swimmer who loves the water.
  • Motor skills and coordination. Kicking, arm strokes and breathing together build balance, strength and coordination as children grow.
  • Social growth. Toddler classes use nursery rhymes, games and word association, so children learn to listen, take turns and have fun together.
  • The right strokes from the start. Bad habits are hard to undo later. Tao Li's method teaches correct technique from the first lesson, which means faster progress and stronger muscle development.
  • A path for the future. Children who show talent can move on to our squad, competitive and DSA programmes.
Baby and infant swimming, under 3

Infant swim lessons: a gentle first start in the water

Babies and infants can start before they turn three. These first lessons help little ones feel happy and relaxed in the water and begin the water safety habits they will build on in our toddler programme.

  • Taught by coaches certified by Swim Australia to teach babies and toddlers: Coach Wei Tatt and Coach Xiao Yun
  • Songs, play and gentle water confidence, never pressure
  • A natural path into our 3-level toddler programme

Swimming lessons for 3 and 4 year olds

Our 3-level toddler programme teaches the key elements of swimming while helping your child's physical and social development, with plenty of fun along the way.

  • Age 3: nursery rhymes, games and word association make the water a happy place. The aim is to be water safe and water confident.
  • Age 4: children pick up basic freestyle arms and kicking quickly. Learning the right strokes now is also how we spot a child's swimming potential.

Ready for the first splash?

Toddler trial lessons are $55. Your child's coach will place them in the right level from day one.

Kids swimming, ages 5 to 12

Six levels, from non-swimmer to confident swimmer

Our own teaching modules take a child from their first float to diving and turning. Systematic teaching means better, faster progress and stronger water confidence.

SwimSafer

SwimSafer lessons: Singapore's national water safety programme

We teach SwimSafer 2.0, the national water safety programme run by Sport Singapore through ActiveSG. It teaches children to stay safe in and around water, not just to swim, and every stage ends with a certificate.

Each stage is around 12 hours of lessons, with a practical assessment in the pool and a short online water safety quiz. Certificates are issued electronically and can be collected through your ActiveSG account.

SwimSafer stages taught at the club: *Required

StageWhat your child works towards
Stage 1Confidence and independence in the water, and staying safe at the pool and in deep water
Stage 2Entering the water unassisted, sculling, feet-first surface dives and 25m of continuous swimming
Stage 3Stride-jump entries, putting on a life jacket in the water and 50m of continuous swimming
BronzeStroke technique and coordinated breathing in deep water, and 100m using a variety of strokes

How progress is tracked

You always know how your child is doing

  1. Trial lesson

The first lesson is a trial. The coach assesses your child's swimming and decides which level they should join.

  2. Student file

Every new student gets a file with their programme outline and a 16-week lesson plan.

  3. Every lesson planned

The coach reviews the file before each lesson and updates it after, so learning is tracked.

  4. Quarterly report

After 16 lessons your child takes a swim assessment, and you receive a written report.

Questions from parents

Kids swimming lessons: your questions answered

What age can my child start swimming lessons?

Babies and infants under 3 can start with our baby lessons, taught by coaches certified to teach babies and toddlers. From 3, children join our 3-level toddler programme, where lessons use songs and games to build water safety and confidence. From 5 to 12, they move through our 6-level kids programme.

My child is nervous in the water. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Many children start nervous. Every child begins with water confidence, floating and breathing before any strokes, and moves on only when ready. Coach Joshua and Coach Nicholas specialise in helping students overcome a fear of water, and toddler classes keep it playful with games and songs.

How does the first lesson work?

The first lesson is a trial. The coach watches your child in the water, assesses their swimming and places them in the right level of our 6-level programme. A student file is then created with their programme outline and a 16-week lesson plan, so every lesson starts exactly where they are.

Do you teach SwimSafer?

Yes. We teach SwimSafer 2.0, Singapore's national water safety programme run by Sport Singapore. It has six stages, Stage 1 to 3 then Bronze, Silver and Gold, each of around 12 hours of lessons. Every stage ends with an in-pool assessment and an online quiz, and your child receives an e-certificate.

How big are the classes?

Toddler classes have up to 6 children with one coach, and each lesson lasts 45 minutes. Each toddler level runs for 16 sessions. Small groups mean the coach can correct every child's technique during the lesson, which is how the right strokes are built from the start.

How will I know my child is improving?

Every child has a 16-week lesson plan. The coach reviews it before each lesson and updates it afterwards, so progress is tracked lesson by lesson. After 16 lessons, your child takes a swim assessment and you receive a written report showing what they have mastered and what comes next.

Where are the lessons held?

Lessons run at two venues: Temasek Club, 131 Rifle Range Road, Singapore 588406, and Sembawang Country Club, 249 Sembawang Road, Singapore 758352. Members of either club and non-members can enquire. Tell us which venue suits you when you book your trial lesson.

Questions

Adult swimming lessons: your questions answered

I cannot swim at all. Can I still join?

Yes. Our learn-to-swim modules are built for complete beginners, whatever their age. You start with water confidence and breathing, then learn correct freestyle technique, going from non-swimmer to confident swimmer in 12 sessions. If you would prefer a coach to yourself, private classes are also available.

I can swim, but my technique is poor. Can you help?

Yes. A coach first identifies what is holding you back, then builds a programme around your goals, whether that is swimming further, faster or more comfortably. For focused technique work our stroke correction specialists can help, and a private class gives you the coach's full attention.

Should I choose a group or a private class?

Group classes suit most adults and are the more affordable option. Choose a private class if you are very nervous in the water, have an unpredictable schedule or want the fastest possible progress. Both follow the same Tao Li teaching method, so you can switch later.

Do you have ladies-only swimming classes?

Yes. We run ladies-only classes for women who prefer to learn with other women, for complete beginners and for swimmers who want better technique. Our team includes female coaches, among them Head Coach Tao Li. Ask us for the current class times and venue.

Where are adult lessons held?

Adult lessons run at Temasek Club, 131 Rifle Range Road, and Sembawang Country Club, 249 Sembawang Road. Tell us which venue and which days suit you when you enquire, and we will suggest the best class for your level.

Preparing for Direct School Admission through swimming

Direct School Admission lets students enter a secondary school on the strength of a talent such as a sport. Swimming skills take time to build, so the earlier a child's talent is spotted and nurtured, the better.

  • Identify your child's talent and interest in swimming from a young age
  • An Acceleration Programme to build skills and reach competition readiness sooner
  • Coached by the same team that develops our top-ranked juniors

Is your child ready for the squad?

Ask for an assessment. We will tell you which programme fits and what it takes to move up.

Stroke correction

Find out what is holding you back

Correct technique is the key to your full potential in the water. The earlier a swimmer fixes their strokes, the sooner they swim at their best.

  • For swimmers of any age and level who want better efficiency and speed
  • Helps learn-to-swim students move confidently into competitive swimming
  • Taught by experienced stroke correction specialists who spot and fix faults quickly

Lifesaving

Lifesaving courses

Lifesaving teaches strong swimmers how to keep themselves and others safe: rescue techniques, survival skills and calm decision-making in the water. It is a natural next step after SwimSafer and a good foundation for anyone thinking about lifeguarding later.

  • Rescue and survival skills in the water
  • Coached by Coach Wei Tatt, who holds Lifesaving 1, 2 and 3, and CPR, AED and first aid certification

Awards offered, minimum age and schedule: *Required

Open water and triathlon

Open water and triathlon swim coaching

Swimming in the sea is different from the pool: no lane ropes, no wall to push off, waves and currents. We coach swimmers and triathletes to sight, pace and stay calm in open water.

  • Pool sessions to build endurance and efficient freestyle for race day

Questions

Squad and skills: your questions answered

How does my child join the competitive squad?

Your child is assessed by our competitive coaches and placed in one of our five training programmes, matched to their age and level. Swimmers are reassessed regularly and move up as they improve. Every competitive coach has trained and raced at national or international level themselves.

What is the DSA programme?

Direct School Admission lets students enter a secondary school on the strength of a talent such as swimming. Our DSA programme spots and develops that talent early, with an Acceleration Programme to build skills and competition readiness sooner, coached by the team behind our top-ranked junior swimmers.

Who is stroke correction for?

Any swimmer of any age or level who wants to swim more efficiently and faster. It suits learn-to-swim students preparing for competitive swimming, squad swimmers chasing better times and adults who want cleaner technique. Our stroke correction specialists spot faults quickly and show how to fix them.
